The Barrie Canoe and Kayak Club

ABOUT

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

"For the purpose of uniting paddlers for the protection of their interests, for the improvement of their skills and the  promotion of all aspects of paddle related activities, the Barrie Canoe Club, Inc. was formed, in the spirit of a service,   non-profit, community-oriented organization, working to further the welfare of the community as a whole through the promotion of water safety and improved recreational skills."

The Barrie Canoe Club (BCC) was established in 1977. From the initial membership of 20 canoeists, the club membership has grown to over 250 canoeists and kayakers alike.

In 2005, the Barrie Canoe Club officially changed it name to the "Barrie Canoe and Kayak Club Inc." (BCKC), to represent the full spectrum of paddling disciplines.

LOCATION

You can find the BCKC at the Barrie Southshore Community Centre, on Lakeshore Dr. Barrie, Ontario.  For maps and directions, click here.

OPERATIONS

The club is run entirely by a dedicated group of volunteers who work tirelessly to provide the trips and programs that keeps the club in the forefront of community activities in the Simcoe County area.

TRIPS/ACTIVITIES

The clubs offers a wide variety of recreation paddling opportunities for all levels of paddling experience. If you are just looking for a few moments kayaking on Kempenfelt Bay or a two week wilderness canoe adventure, the Club will have what you are looking for. Our trips range from day trips to the Minesing Swamp to weekends kayaking the Thirty Thousand Islands of Georgian Bay. Long weekends will find club members tripping in Algonquin Park or whitewater paddling the Ottawa or Madawaska Rivers. Extended week (or longer) trips have found us on Lake Superior, Quetico Provincial Park or kayaking the Newfoundland shore.

We also try to keep ourselves visible in the community with our very successful Community Paddle Day every June as well as setting up booths and displays at a variety of local events every year. As a community service, the club provides equipment to not-for-profit groups such as church, schools and environmental groups.

BOAT HOUSE

Our boat house is located in the basement level of Barrie's Southshore Community Centre. This location provides the club with plenty of parking and easy access to the waters of Kempenfelt Bay.

You may also arrive by bicycle, roller blade or foot  as the popular recreational trail (part of the Trans Canada Trail) which circumnavigates the bay and passes right by our front door. The boat house is the centre of activities during the paddling season with the Monday & Wednesday night paddles and courses through out the week. The boat house is also the start and finish point for most of our trips.

COURSES

Several members of the BCKC are certified Ontario Recreational Canoe & Kayak Association (ORCKA) instructors. As a result, the BCKC offers a number of paddling courses, ranging from beginner to advanced instruction. Check out our courses page for a full description

MEETINGS

Club meetings are held throughout the year. During the winter season (October to May), we meet in the main lounge of the Southshore Community Centre. These meetings are open to the General public. During the summer (June to Sept) the club is open every Monday and Wednesday night for members and guests to sign out a club canoe or kayak for an evening paddling on Kempenfelt Bay.
