The Barrie Canoe
Club places a high priority on safe canoeing and the development of skilled
instructors. Club instructors are qualified under the
Ontario Recreational
Canoeing & Kayaking Association (ORCKA). For more information on
these organizations, go to
Links .
Periodically, clinics are offered by the BCKC, including map and compass,
river rescue, wilderness first aid, and canoe/kayak practice and learn-to-roll (including
winter pool sessions).
Course costs are kept well below those of other organizations. Courses are filled on a first come, first served basis. The instructor-student ratio
is 1-5 or 1-6 (sea kayaking). If available, an assistant instructor is used when there are over five/six
students.
To register for courses, submit a signed application and
payment to the Course Coordinator, either
by mail
, or in person at Paddle Nights and
monthly general meetings. Please note:
Instructors do not register students.
All courses
fulfill Ontario Recreational Canoeing & Kayaking Association (ORCKA)
requirements and are taught by certified instructors at the Barrie South Shore Community
Centre (SSCC). Youth
Courses are ages 12-16.
Please note:
Signed Waivers and Medical information
must be provided before participating in any course or clinic.
