FAQ's

The Barrie Canoe & Kayak Club (BCKC) membership year runs from January to January. If you join during October, November or December, you are given a membership for the following year. There is a draw for a free membership at both the January and February general meetings. General meetings are held the second Monday of every month. When holidays fall on that Monday, the meeting is generally held the following Monday. The Annual General Meeting is in November.

BCKC members are all ages. There are activities for everyone in the family. No one is too young or too old to belong to the BCKC. Activities include paddling in the summer; hiking in the spring and fall; x-c skiing, tobogganing, and winter camping. Also, there are presentations, workshops, and meetings all year round.

How Do I Find Out About Trips?

Twice a year the BCKC holds trip planning meetings (one in the spring, one in the fall) to plan for the coming season. Everyone is invited to give their input. A variety of trips are offered for members with all levels of ability. There are day trips, weekend trips, and week or two week trips, which are led by volunteer members who have the appropriate certification.  An activity sheet is distributed in the spring and fall newsletters, and is available under Trips on the web site.   It is each members responsibility to confirm their intention to go on a trip by contacting the leader well in advance of departure. Everyone is responsible for arranging for their own equipment, food and transportation; however, club equipment may be borrowed if you do not have your own, and sharing transportation is often the norm. Gas and food are your usual expenses. For further information, please contact the Tripping Director.

How Can I Improve My Paddling?

The BCKC offers paddle nights, clinics and courses for people who wish to improve their paddling skill. During the summer months, the boathouse is open Monday and Wednesday evenings so that members can sign out equipment and paddle (within a safe distance from the boathouse) to practice their paddle strokes, rolls, etc. More experienced members are always willing to help with instruction if you ask. A variety of free clinics are held intermittently throughout the spring, summer and fall to assist members with their skills.

Courses for certification by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association (ORCA) are run through the Club. A special meeting, called by the Course Director, is held early in the year to decide which courses will be offered and to arrange for certified instructors. Everyone is invited to give their input. There is an opportunity to register for courses in the early spring and throughout the summer at general meetings, or by calling the Course Director. Registrations for courses must be accompanied by a signed application and payment. Course are filled on a first come, first served basis. Instructor/student ratios are low in order to ensure individual attention.

Pool sessions are run each Jan, Feb, and March and are an additional cost of $10.00 per member. Practice your roll and keep your body is shape.

How Do I Arrange To Borrow Club Equipment For Club Activities?

In order to arrange to borrow a canoe, river kayak, sea kayak or racing shell and related equipment for use on a Club outing or course (no borrowing for personal use), you must call the Equipment Director. He/She will arrange a convenient time for pick up and return. All equipment must be signed out and signed in every time you use it. Each member is expected to supply their own method for carrying the equipment on their vehicle safely (i.e. rope, foam blocks or roof racks, etc.) Note: The Club does not provide tents, sleeping bags, packs, or any personal gear.

If Club equipment is damaged or lost, please advise the Equipment Director as soon as possible. Either remuneration, replacement or repair will have to be arranged.

Can I Use the Training Room?

The training room at the Southshore Centre is for the joint use of Barrie Rowing Club and Barrie Canoe & Kayak Club members. Any member wishing to use the equipment may do so after receiving instruction on proper usage. Please contact an Executive member for further information.

How Do I Get Involved in Racing?

The BCKC offers marathon racing sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe Racing Association (O.M.C.R.A.). You may contact the Racing Director for further information. Training sessions are scheduled at least two evenings per week.

What Does The Club Offer Children?

In addition to the above trips and courses (which are open to children of all ages and abilities), special trips and clinics for kids are often scheduled during the summer.
