SUMMER TRIPS 2012

COMING SOON
As of Sunday, 22 January 2012

Welcome to the Summer Trips Page! In here you will find many memorable trips on some of the finest Ontario waterways, with fantastic camaraderie, good times, and plenty of peaceful nature to invigorate the soul!

Please Note: You must be a current member of the Barrie Canoe & Kayak Club to participate in club trips and activities. Please provide your membership number when registering for trips and outings. The sign up sheets will be at the Monday night paddle events (also posted online). Since these are “interest only” sheets, members must still contact the trip leader for each outing. You are responsible for contacting the trip leader well in advance of the trip date to express your interest in participating.  For safety reasons, the trip leader has the final say about who goes on their trips. Participants must assume all risks associated with the activity and must provide the trip leader with a signed Medical/Emergency Information Form prior to the trip. Non-members are entitled to participate as a guest of a member on one day-trip per year and must sign the Waiver of General Liability and provide a Medical/Emergency Information Form to the trip leader prior to the trip beginning.

“Basic” means you must be able to control your boat in tandem with another paddler.  It does not necessarily mean that you must have certification - please clarify skills required with Trip Leader prior to confirming your participation.

  • Basic AB – O.R.C.K.A. Flatwater Level AB is a prerequisite.

  • MWC - Moving Water Canoe

  • MWK / WWK - Moving Water Kayak / White water Kayak

  • TR - Tripping

  • FW / LW - Flat Water / Lake Water (No moving water)

  • SK - Sea Kayaking

From your tripping coordinator:

This completes the 2011 summer tripping season. I would like to thank all the trip leaders that gave of their time and energy to make this one of our best tripping summers so far. As a trip leader myself I would also like to thank all the club members that came out and enjoyed the great variety of outings we offered this past summer. There is nothing like an enthusiastic turn out for an event to make your trip leaders feel that their efforts have not been wasted and that the club members are enjoying the various outings they offer. After all; It takes both organisers(Trip Leaders) and participants to make for a great paddling season. Thanks everyone for getting out there and doing it. Now watch for the upcoming-2011-2012 Winter tripping list.

last minute trips

no last minute trips at the moment but check here often!

Trippers: Before you make or break a commitment to go on a BCKC trip, please consider the impact on the Trip Leader and other participants. A lot of planning goes into these trips, and if you cancel after the planning meeting, a great deal of reorganization has to take place. It is certainly not fair to our wonderful Trip Leaders who give so much of their own time to lead these trips. Please be considerate!

SEA KAYAKING CLASSIFICATIONS:

Pace/Endurance describing the strength, endurance and fitness required to comfortably complete the trip:

A -   Not Strenuous:  Daily paddling typically less than 3 hours, with distances of 10 kilometers or less.

B -   Moderately Strenuous:  Daily paddling, typically between 3 and 5 hours, with distances of 10 to 20 km.

C -   Strenuous:  Daily paddling typically more than 5 hours, with distances of 20 kilometers or more.

Skills Required describing the paddling skills and seamanship required to handle safely the situations that could be encountered on the trip.

1. Novice:  Requires basic-paddling skills, practiced wet exits.  Expect protected waters, easy landings, and shelter for resting.

2. Intermediates:  Requires basic paddling skills including the ability to brace, self-rescue, and participate in assisted rescues, comfortable in one-meter waves.  Mostly protected waters, some difficult landings, and some sheltered spots for resting.

3. Experienced:  Requires advanced paddling, seamanship and rescue skills.  Ability to handle waves greater than 1 meter.  Expect exposed waters, open crossings, large waves, and moderate to strong winds, surf, fog, and potentially difficult landings.  Sheltered resting and landing spots could be few.

4. Expert:  Requires advance paddling, seamanship and rescue skills.  Ability to roll is strongly recommended. Expect long open crossings, rugged and exposed coast, large waves, strong winds, surf, turbulent water, fog and difficult landings.

The term “exploratory” indicates the organizer has not been on the planned route or in the area before.  Therefore, trip conditions cannot be predicted from past experience.

NOTE:  Trips are classified in advance.  Weather conditions may make it necessary to modify these classifications on the day of the

event.
